Pharma and biopharma applications

With the flexibility and performance for analytical R&D, and the simplicity and reproducibility needed for manufacturing QA/QC, charged aerosol detection can be used for the analysis of pharmaceuticals (large and small molecule). Learn how CAD can be applied in your work with tips, tricks, pointers, and expert advice from our guest speakers.

Presentations:

Peptide Quantification by CAD

Kilian Conde Frieboes - Novo Nordisk

How CAD enabled universal quantification in a high throughput library purification platform

Marcel Reck - Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research

LC-Charged aerosol detector in early and late-stage pharmaceutical development: Selection of regression models at optimum power function value

Imad Haidar Ahmad - Merck Research Laboratories

Roundtable and Q and A discussion

With Special guest Ulrike Holzgrabe, Institut für Pharmazie und Lebensmittelchemie University of Wuerzburg

Learning points:

  • Understand the technology you are using and set it up correctly
  • CAD is reliable and an easy solution to quantify novel compounds without the need for compound specific calibration
  • CAD is a key technology in our high throughput library purification platform
  • Using quantitative LC-CAD in highly regulated laboratories e.g., GLP, GMP

Who should attend:

  • Laboratory managers and directors
  • Technology leaders
  • Principal scientists
  • Laboratory analyst

Presenter: Kilian Conde-Frieboes (Principal Scientist, Novo Nordisk)

Studied Chemistry in Kiel/Germany.Doctor of Science in 1992 (Asymmetric Synthesis)Post docs at the University of Frankfurt and University of California, San Diego (1992-1995).Assistant at the ETH Zurich (1995-1997).Joined Novo Nordisk in 1997.

Presenter: Marcel Reck (Research Scientist II, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), Switzerland)

Before I joined Novartis in 2006, I have previously finished my apprenticeship at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz in 2004 and worked at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg. I started my research career at Novartis in Basel as a Scientific Associate supporting Global Discovery Chemistry research projects in the area of Autoimmunity/Transplantation and Inflammation. In 2015, I took an opportunity to focus on analytical and purification research optimizing small molecule separations in the area of analytical and preparative Supercritical Fluid Chromatography and RP HPLC. My organic chemistry expertise has enabled me the opportunity to collaborate more broadly with medicinal chemistry teams and this has recently led to me speer-heading a plate based library initiative focussing on best practice and efficient automated QC, purification and quantification using the CAD detector for MilliLibraries (2-5mg scale) of MedChem research projects.

Presenter: Imad Haidar Ahmad, Ph.D (Associate Principal Scientist and supervisor, Merck Rahway, USA)

Imad A. Haidar Ahmad received his Ph.D. from Florida State University under the mentorship of Dr. André Striegel. He completed his postdoctoral research with Prof. Peter Carr at University of Minnesota. He is currently an Associate Principal Scientist and supervisor in the Analytical Chemistry Enabling Technology group within MRL’s AR&D department.

Moderator: Frank Steiner (Senior Manager of Product Applications, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Frank Steiner is Senior Manager of Product Applications and coordinates HPLC based scientific collaborations in Thermo Fisher Scientific as scientific advisor. He joined Dionex Corporation in 2005, now a part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, and had been manager in various HPLC marketing functions. Frank received his PhD degree in chemistry in 1995 from Saarland University in Saarbruecken, Germany where he became assistant professor in 1997 and associate professor in 2003, after his postdoc at the nuclear research center in Saclay, France in 1996. Frank published more than 30 publications in refereed journals and more than 10 text book chapters on HPLC topics.

Moderator: Paul Garnache (Director Research Development, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Paul is an analytical chemist who joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2011 through acquisition of Dionex Corporation. He is a Director of R &D responsible for development of analytical technologies with primary focus on charged aerosol detection (CAD) and electrochemical detection (ECD) for LC. Prior to joining Dionex in 2009, Paul led the development of first and second generation Corona CAD products. He has published more than 50 articles and book chapters and was co-awardee of an NIH Roadmap grant for development of hyphenated EC and LC-MS technologies for metabolomics research. Paul is editor and contributing author to the book “Charged Aerosol Detection for Liquid Chromatography and Related Separation Techniques” published in 2017 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Presenter: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Holzgrabe (University of Würzburg)

Prof. Dr. Ulrike Holzgrabereceived her diploma degree in Chemistry at the University of Marburg in 1979, her approbation in Pharmacy in 1982, and her PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1983 both at the University of Kiel. After habilitation in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Kiel 1989 she became an associate professor at the University of Bonn (1990-1999). In 1988, she was a post-doc fellow at the University of Bath, UK, with A. Casy, in 1994 a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen with J. Gasteiger, and 1995 at the University of Illinois at Chicago with A.F. Hopfinger. Since 1999 she holds a full professorship at the University of Würzburg (declining offers from the universities of Tübingen, Münster and Berlin, and the CEO position of the BfArM). She served as vice-rector of the University of Bonn from 1997-1999 and as a vice-president of the University Wuerzburg from 2018-2021. She was president of the German Pharmaceutical Society from 2004 till 2007. She is/was a member of the German and European Committee of the Pharmacopoeia (BfArM, EDQM), and a member of the scientific boards of the BfArM, BPS of FIP, and the HIPS as well as a collegiate of the DFG. In 2020, she received the “Bayerischen Verdienstorden” (Bavarian order of merit). Her research interests are the development of antiinfectives and GPCR ligands as well as quality analysis of drugs.

She is co-owner of Aamuthera, a company dealing with the development of anticancer drugs.
