Presenter: Dr. Ruth Marfil-Vega (Global Market Manager, Shimadzu Corporation, Japan)

Dr. Ruth Marfil-Vega is the Global Manager for Environment Market at Shimadzu Corporation, based in Tokyo. She has 20+ years of expertise in environmental chemistry and engineering in the US, Europe and Asia. She has worked with the EPA and the utilities industry to design and execute comprehensive solutions for addressing new environmental and water quality issues, including PFAS, regulated and unregulated DBPs, and other emerging contaminants. Since Ruth joined Shimadzu seven years ago, she has continued to work with environmental stakeholders to ensure that analytical instrumentation and workflows support their success. Throughout her career, she has held leadership roles at multiple organizations; the latest being the chair of the Organic Contaminants Committee at AWWA and co-chair of the international working group BP4NTA. She earned a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Valladolid (Spain) and a PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

Presenter: Mr. Luca Fagiuoli (Global Business Development Manager – Environmental Testing, SGS Société Générale de Surveillance SA, Geneva)

Mr Luca Fagiuoli is Global Business Development Manager – Environmental Testing, and leads the PFAS working group at SGS, the world largest testing, inspection and certification company, based in Switzerland.

His work focuses on environmental testing services to the industry, service providers such as environmental consultants, and public entities such as local and national governmental bodies.

SGS startet to work on PFAS testing in 2001, supporting public authorities in the development of reliable PFAS testing methods, as the recent EPA-1633 method in the US. Today our testing capabilities cover all environmental matrices, products, food, cosmetics, with our laboratories based around the world. APAC represents 33% of our revenue and workforce.

Presenter: Dr. Sachi Taniyasu (Deputy Director, Research Institute and Leader, Group, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan)

Dr. Sachi Taniyasu is a Deputy Director, Research Institute of Environmental Management Research Institute at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan.

Her research focuses on the development and standardization of analytical methods for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), dioxins, and bisphenols, as well as the elucidation of their environmental behavior.

She has been engaged in PFAS research since 2001. The analytical methods for PFASs in water samples that she developed have been internationally recognized and published as ISO standards (ISO 25101 and ISO 21675) and as a Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS K 0450-70-10).

Dr. Taniyasu has received multiple awards for her contributions, including the Otto Hutzinger Student Presentation Award (2003), Award for International Standardization Promotion from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, (2018), the Achievement Award from the Marine Engineering Society of Japan (2018), the Toyama Prize (2022), the Environmental Chemistry Paper Award (2023), and the Environmental Chemistry Technology Award (2025).
