SCIEX: Explore pharma’s toughest challenges - together
What to expect

We’re bringing together experts from AMER and EMEAI to explore how they’re overcoming common challenges using the Echo® MS+ system.

  • On-demand presentations
    • Learn from real-world examples across ADME, oligos, peptide quantification and more.
    • Registrants can submit questions for the roundtable after viewing the content.
  • Live roundtable on June 26
    • Join moderator Jacob McCabe and our presenters for a live session focused on shared challenges, questions, and practical insights.

It isn’t just another webinar - it’s a conversation shaped by you. After watching the on-demand talks, you can submit your own questions directly to the speakers. We’ll bring your questions into the live roundtable on June 26, so you can hear answers to the topics that matter most to you.

Titles of the talks:
  • Available now: Enablement of label-free cellular activity assays via Echo® MS: a case study for SLC transporter assays by Anja Maria Vogelmann, Boehringer Ingelheim
  • Available now: Liquid chromatography optional?: AEMS for efficient protein analysis  by Bart Van Puyvelde, Ghent University
  • Available now: Streamlined Direct-to-Biology via ADE-MS by Daniel Blair, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
  • Ultra high throughput monitoring of next-gen multispecific biotherapeutic bioreactors by Michael Poltash, Janssen Pharmaceuticals

Presenter: Bart Van Puyvelde, Ghent University

Bart Van Puyvelde is a Junior Postdoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Ghent University, Belgium. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he redirected his research efforts toward the development of high-throughput mass spectrometry (MS)-based assays for the detection of viral proteins in nasopharyngeal swab samples, with a particular focus on respiratory viruses. He conducted a research stay at the Van Eyk Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where he investigated the application of acoustic ejection mass spectrometry (AEMS) for peptide analysis. He is currently expanding this line of research through an ongoing collaboration with the VIB Metabolomics Core, led by Prof. Bart Ghesquière.

Presenter: Nick Herold, Echo MS Excellence Team., SCIEX

Nick Herold is responsible for business development efforts related to the Sciex EchoMS+ technology in the Americas since 2022. During this time, he aided in the successful launch of a new product offering resulting in the first global sale of EchoMS+ as well as contributing significantly as it relates to product placements and associated revenue generation. Prior to joining Sciex – a Danaher company, Nick spent time on business development, sales, and marketing at several global companies, including Taconic Biosciences, Thermo Fisher Scientific – Life Technologies, and Perfinity Biosciences. Nick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology-chemistry from Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is a multi-patent holder and has enrolled in professional development at Harvard.

Presenter: Michael Poltash, Janssen Pharmaceuticals

Michael Poltash holds a PhD from Texas A&M University and completed postdoctoral training at Thermo Fisher Scientific performing mass spectrometry instrument development. He is responsible for deploying innovative mass spectrometry methods to characterize and elucidate complex phenomena in the discovery and development of biotherapeutics. He is currently a principal scientist in the Cell Engineering & Analytical Sciences group at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine.

Presenter: Daniel Blair, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Dr. Daniel Blair specializes in automated and modular chemical synthesis. He completed both his MSci and PhD with Varinder Aggarwal at the University of Bristol, UK, working on lithiation-borylation methodology. This was followed by a postdoc at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with Martin D Burke which centered on automated chemical synthesis, and was supported by a Damon-Runyon Fellowship. In August 2022, he became a part of the St. Jude faculty, as an Assistant Member in the Department of Chemical Biology & Therapeutics. His lab focusses on developing high-throughput technologies for creating and comparing small molecules in biological contexts.

Presenter: Anja Maria Vogelmann, Boehringer Ingelheim

Anja Vogelmann is a pharmacist by training with a background in assay development and drug discovery. After her studies, she did a research stay at the University of Copenhagen to investigate epigenetic PROTACs. Afterwards, she did her PhD in the group of Prof. Manfred Jung at the University of Freiburg focusing on assay development for the characterization of epigenetic modulators. In 2024, she joined Boehringer Ingelheim as PostDoc to enable MS-based high-throughput assays for cellular model systems.

Presenter: Chang Liu, Staff Research Scientist of SCIEX

Dr. Chang Liu is a Staff Research Scientist of SCIEX (Ontario, Canada), specializing in hardware research on the MS sample preparation and sample introduction technologies. His team invented the Acoustic Ejection Mass Spectrometry (AEMS) technology and developed its applications in high-throughput drug discovery. Chang earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Peking University, China, and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He is the recipient of the 2021 Bioanalysis Outstanding Contribution Award (BOSCA), and 2022 Young Investigator Award from the Chinese American Society for Mass Spectrometry (CASMS). Dr. Liu has published more than 50 research papers and held 25 issued patents. He is the editor of the book “High-Throughput Mass Spectrometry in Drug Discovery” (Wiley 2023) and serves as an Associate Editor of SLAS Technology.
