Waters Corporation: Solving Problems That Matter - a Waters webinar series featuring USP speakers.
Waters Corporation: Solving Problems That Matter - a Waters webinar series featuring USP speakers.

LG polymers are biodegradable polyesters of lactide (or lactic acid) and glycolide (or glycolic acid) monomers that are used in controlled-release formulations with varying drug-release periods. The properties of LG polymers are strongly affected by molar mass distribution and molecular topology. These characteristics can be described in detail by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with advanced detectors.  Characterization and testing of these fascinating polymers is nothing sort of challenging. This webinar will highlight USP’s holistic LG polymer quality standards and solutions as well as advances in light scattering detection for the characterization of LG polymers.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Learn about LG polymer standards and solutions from the USP
  • Explore how light scattering and related analytical techniques can provide detailed description of molecular structure of LG polymers

Who should attend

Scientists involved with the use or analysis of LG polymers in the pharmaceutical field

Presenter: Peng Zhang (US Pharmacopeia)

Dr. Peng Zhang is a principal scientist at the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) in Rockville, MD. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry from Vanderbilt University. In his current role, he is primarily responsible for standard setting activities related to the development and update of high-priority excipient quality standards, including those for lactide (or lactic acid) and glycolide (or glycolic acid) (LG) polymers and phospholipids, under the Excipient Expert Committees.

Presenter: Stepan Podzimek, Ph.D. (Scientific Consultant, Waters l Wyatt Technology)

Prof. Stepan Podzimek works as a scientific consultant for Waters | Wyatt. In addition, he is also working as a head of the Department of Analytical and Physical Chemistry at a Czech R&D company SYNPO, and holds a professorial position at the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Macromolecular Materials in the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the University of Pardubice in the Czech Republic. He has been working in the field of polymer analysis and characterization for over 40 years. His research interests include methodology of the characterization of molecular and chemical structure of synthetic and natural polymers by size exclusion chromatography, multi-angle light scattering, asymmetric flow field flow fractionation, liquid chromatography, and viscometry of dilute polymer solutions. In particular, he has focused on the characterization of branched polymers and structure-property relationships. He is an author or co-author of over 70 scientific papers and the author of a book entitled “Light Scattering, Size Exclusion Chromatography and Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation” published by Wiley.

Moderated by: Isabelle Vu Trieu (Pharmaceutical Market Development Manager, Americas, Waters Corporation)

Isabelle is a business development professional dedicated to delivering benefits to analytical scientists in the life sciences industry. With over 20 years of experience in providing chromatography and mass spectrometry solutions, Isabelle is particularly interested in helping pharmaceutical scientists achieve the data quality and integrity needed to drive decisions for drug quality, safety and efficacy. Isabelle joined Waters in 2009 and currently manages the development of the pharmaceutical market in the Americas. She holds Masters’ degrees in Chemistry from Columbia University and the University Claude Bernard in Lyon, France as well as a Chemical Engineering degree from Ecole Supérieure de Chimie Physique Electronique in Lyon, France.
