SelectScience: Concepts, Challenges and Applications for 2D-LC of Polymers

Synthetic and naturally occurring macromolecules are often complex mixtures of many molecules differing in molar mass, as well as in other structural features such as comonomer content and distribution, branching, or end-group functionalization. One-dimensional separation methods like size exclusion chromatography (SEC) or interaction chromatography (IC) are usually not sufficient to resolve such complex mixtures due to limitations of the separation mechanisms. Given the multidimensional complexity of such samples, hyphenated separation methods are increasingly applied for their characterization.

In a 2D-LC separation, separation is first achieved by one feature (e.g. comonomer content) followed by a second separation by another property, such as size. This allows determination of the correlation between different structural features such as the dependence of chemical composition on molar mass.

In this webinar, our speakers will present the concept, different approaches for technical realization, and industrial applications of 2D-LC in polymer separations.

Presenter: Dr. Wolfgang Radke (Head of Contract Analysis, Agilent Technologies, Inc.)

Dr. Wolfgang Radke obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Mainz, Germany. He has over 30 years of experience in the field of polymer chromatography. He has significant knowledge in size exclusion chromatography, gel permeation chromatography (SEC/GPC) with conventional, MALS, and viscometry detectors . He is also experienced in polymer separations using interaction chromatography and two-dimensional chromatography. He is currently the head of the contract analysis group at Agilent Technologies.

Presenter: Dr. Mubasher Ahmed Bashir (Research Scientist, Dow Inc.)

Dr. Mubasher Bashir obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the German Institute of Plastics, DKI at TU Darmstadt, Germany. He is a research scientist and the global polymer separations technology network leader in analytical science, Core R&D, at the Dow Chemical Company. He has more than 16 years of experience in analytical research and applications in the chemical industry. His current work focuses on characterizing complex polymers by employing various separation techniques (AF4, SEC, 2D-LC) and advanced detection with the goal of establishing structure property relationships to facilitate new product and process development.

Presenter: Jemima Arnold (Editorial Assistant, SelectScience)

Jemima studied Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Bristol, UK, and as a member of the Editorial team, she now plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
