SelectScience: Characterization of Macromolecules by SEC-Light Scattering

In this webinar, our expert speakers will provide an overview of the fundamentals of light scattering for macromolecular characterization by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), including good practice for sample preparation and experimental methods.

The use of multi-angle light scattering (MALS) as a tool to determine effective SEC conditions for the macromolecule of interest will be discussed. A description of the measurable quantities SEC-MALS offers and the careful considerations that are required in fitting light scattering data to ensure accurate macromolecular molecular weight and size measurements will be provided.

Presenter: Dr. Paul Balding (Associate Research Scientist, Dow Inc.)

Dr. Paul Balding received his PhD in Chemistry from The Georgia Institute of Technology for work on the synthesis and characterization of model polyelectrolytes and dynamics behavior in low salt solutions. He received a BSc Honours in Chemistry from the University of Wollongong, Australia, working on the rheology and mechanical performance of 3D-printed hydrogel materials. He is currently a subject matter expert working in the separations science team at Dow Chemical in the polyolefin space with a focus on high-temperature SEC-coupled MALS.

Presenter: Dr. Daniela Held (R&D Director, GPC/SEC Center of Excellence, Agilent Technologies, Inc.)

Dr. Daniela Held received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Mainz, Germany, for work on the synthesis and characterization of star-branched polyelectolytes. In 2000, she joined the software team of PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH, developing workflow solutions for advanced detection techniques and developing customer trainings. Through the acquisition of PSS by Agilent Technologies, she became R&D director at the GPC/SEC Center of Excellence in Mainz, Germany.

Presenter: Jemima Arnold (Editorial Assistant, SelectScience)

Jemima studied Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Bristol, UK, and as a member of the Editorial team, she now plays an integral role in shaping the content on SelectScience.
