Avantor/VWR: Chromatography Mini Symposium

We are happy to invite you to join us as we present the latest in our series of chromatography webinars to support you in your analytical workflow. This series of seminars covers a range of subjects from sharing best practice for reproducible chromatography to providing an introduction to the theory and practice of method translations. We discuss the use of selectivity as a tool for method development and techniques for the analysis of biomolecules are reviewed.

Webinar 1 (35 min): Putting quality back into your u/HPLC - best practice U/HPLC methods are powerful analytical tools when they work reproducibly.

In this seminar we will look at common problems that can occur when running U/HPLC methods and consider ways to avoid or solve them. Good maintenance of your HPLC columns is essential in any laboratory to ensure the best possible column lifetime, therefore keeping methods running. This seminar is ideal for those chromatographers involved in practical U/HPLC and will help analysts think about best practices to maintain good chromatography.

Webinar 2 (35 min): Method development strategies using selectivity as a tool

In this presentation we review the importance of selectivity from a theoretical and practical perspective and how this relates to the resolution of analytes for method development. With an understanding of selectivity, and using chromatographic data, we discuss phase design and how it is possible to introduce functionality that enhances selectivity, whilst maximising other desirable attributes such as phase stability and reproducibility. Novel analytical phases are explored for their improved chromatographic performance, selectivity and value in method development for a range of analytes and separations. Method development approaches and pragmatic simple method development platforms are discussed.

Webinar 3 (35 min): Stationary phases for the analysis of biomolecules

This seminar explores the advantages and applications of techniques such as size exclusion, ion exchange and affinity chromatography in the analysis of biomolecules. This seminar is suitable for both scientists already using these techniques and those familiar with small molecules who are looking to apply chromatographic techniques to larger molecules. New developments within these techniques will be considered.

Webinar 4 (35 min): Introduction to the theory and practice of LC method translations and LC method transfers between instruments.

This short presentation introduces the analyst to isocratic and gradient method translations. It includes adjusting column dimensions (e.g., scaling a method up or down); moving between different instruments (e.g., transferring a method between sites) and modifying particle platforms (e.g., between fully porous and solid-core silica particles). This seminar will introduce the theory and illustrate each situation with practical examples including data for successful translations and common reasons for failed method translations. Tools available for automatically performing the necessary calculations are also highlighted.

Presenter: Dr. Brian Montgomery

Brian has over 2 decades of experience working in chromatography and pharma R&D, with extensive practical knowledge of both liquid and super-critical fluid chromatography method development. He has been responsible for the introduction, development and application of chiral LC and chiral SFC technology in early drug discovery, led a purification team concentrating on chiral LC/SFC applications, and has been training scientists for many years in the skills necessary at analytical and preparative levels. Brian continues to support customers by providing technical advice, training and consultancy services.

Presenter: Dr. Helen Poole

With a PhD in biochemistry, Dr Helen Poole has over 2 decades of experience in the chromatography industry, working closely with key suppliers and supporting customers across a range of industries both nationally and internationally. Dr Poole has a particular interest in bio-pharmaceutical chromatography and is a committee member of the Chromatographic Society. In her current role, she works closely with both suppliers and customers providing technical and application help and advice as well as bespoke training.
