SelectScience: Revealing What Others Leave Unseen: The Future of Ion Mobility Has Arrived

MOBILion Systems is disrupting the separations game, enhancing the way we characterize biotherapeutics and identify biomarkers.

Existing separation technologies often lack the resolution and throughput that pharmaceutical and clinical researchers need. MOBILion’s High-Resolution Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry (HRIM-MS) platform enables separation and identification of the most challenging molecules with unprecedented resolution. Leveraging a 13-meter ion mobility path length to provide deeper level characterization without compromising time or reproducibility. Enable fast, efficient separation and identification of molecules other instruments fail to detect.

Join us for the virtual product launch of MOBILion’s HRIM-MS platform featuring presentations by early adopters and beta users of this best in class separations technology, including Prof. John McLean, Vanderbilt University, Dr. Jared Auclair, Northeastern University and scientists from Protein Metrics. Learn how this best-in-class separations technology promises to fill characterization gaps, bring biologic drugs to market faster and accelerate biomarker discoveries.

Who should attend:

  • Scientists seeking deeper-level characterization of biotherapeutics
  • Scientists requiring better separation of complex and challenging molecules
  • Researchers looking for potential disease biomarkers
  • Researchers seeking rapid and reproducible methods of characterizing large-scale sample sets

Presentation 1: Revealing what others leave unseen: Introducing MOBILion’s new high-resolution ion mobility mass spectrometry platform

MOBILion’s high-resolution ion mobility mass spectrometry (HRIM-MS) platform is designed to enable the separation and identification of the most challenging molecules with unprecedented resolution.

This virtual product launch will feature live footage from MOBILion’s HRIM-MS instrument release event along with testimonials from current users of this new separations technology.

Presentation 2: Complex protein workflow solutions with Protein Metrics

In January 2021, MOBILion and Protein Metrics joined forces to deliver on the promise of eliminating impediments to identifying and characterizing critical quality attributes(CQAs) with the reliability, repeatability and speed required in modern biopharmaceutical organizations developing more complex protein therapeutics.

This session will present workflow solutions that aim to combine the fastest, highest resolution, most reproducible therapeutic protein analysis with simple, automated data analysis and visualization.

Presentation 3: Mapping biology at high resolution: Molecular phenomics in systems, synthetic, and chemical biology

One of the predominant challenges in systems-wide analyses and molecular phenomics is the broad-scale characterization of the molecular inventory in cells, tissues, and biological fluids.

Advances in computational systems biology rely heavily on the experimental capacity to make omics measurements, i.e., integrated metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics, glycomics, etc., accompanied with fast minimal sample preparation, high resolving power in separation dimensions, rapid measurements, high concentration dynamic range, low limits of detection, and high selectivity.

This confluence of figures-of-merit places demanding challenges on analytical platforms for such analyses. Ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) provides rapid gas-phase electrophoretic separations on the basis of molecular structure and is well suited for integration with rapid mass spectrometry detection techniques. Advances in the resolving power of the ion mobility dimension, coupled with enhanced accuracy and precision, are opening new directions for integrating these data into molecular phenomic workflows, with a special emphasis on lipidomics.

In this webinar, Prof. John McLean, Vanderbilt University, will discuss new advances in bioinformatics and biostatistics and how they can be used to approach biological queries from an unbiased and untargeted perspective.

Presentation 4: The changing landscape of biotherapeutics: A look at the role of analytical technologies

The characterization of biological products is an important part of the entire biological development pipeline. The landscape of this characterization is ever evolving as new product classes, such as biosimilars or gene/cell therapies, come to the market.

In this webinar, Dr. Jared Auclair will explore the landscape of analytical characterization throughout the life cycle of a drug product, in research and development, process development, quality characterization and more. In particular, Auclair will emphasize the current trends and potential future trends in the field, especially in relation to the HRIM technology, and provide insights into his recent work with intact protein analysis as well as peptide mapping, highlighting key advantages. Lastly, this webinar will also discuss several areas of future impact the HRIM technology may play in the biotherapeutic space.

Presenter: Dr. Melissa Sherman (CEO, MOBILion Systems Inc.)

Dr. Melissa Sherman is the founding CEO of MOBILion Systems Inc., an analytical instrumentation company accelerating biotherapeutic drug development and multiomic biomarker discovery with products based on the SLIM high-resolution ion mobility separations technology invented by Dr. Richard Smith at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Sherman is a polymer chemist by training and has spent her 20 plus-year corporate career building and growing businesses within Fortune 100 companies and start-ups, in industries ranging from fashion apparel to FDA-regulated surgical materials. With a successful exit track record, Sherman has a passion for building successful high-tech businesses driven by best-in-class teams, with speed and execution efficiency.

Presenter: Dr John McLean (Stevenson Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Vanderbilt University)

John A. McLean is Stevenson Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Center for Innovative Technology, and Deputy Director of the Institute for Integrative Biosystems Research and Education at Vanderbilt University. Prof. McLean completed his PhD at George Washington University in 2001, performed postdoctoral research at Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany, and then was a postdoctoral at Texas A&M University with Prof. David H. Russell in biological mass spectrometry. McLean and colleagues focus on the conceptualization, design, and construction of structural mass spectrometers, specifically targeting complex samples in systems, synthetic, and chemical biology. The mass spectrometry technique allows researchers to identify 10s of thousands of different molecules in a sample in a fraction of a second. His group applies these strategies to forefront translational research areas in drug discovery, personalized medicine, and ‘human-on-chip’ synthetic biology platforms. Prof. McLean has received a number of awards, including the Waters Center of Innovation, Agilent Thought Leader Award Excellence in Teaching Award from the student members of the American Chemical Society, a Defense Threat Reduction Agency Research Award, an American Society for Mass Spectrometry Research Award, a Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh Award, an R&D 100 Award, and the Bunsen–Kirchhoff Prize from the GDCh (German Chemical Society), among others. He has published over 150 manuscripts, book chapters, and patents and serves as an Associate Editor for Nature Molecular Phenomics and on the Editorial Boards of several leading scientific journals.

Presenter: Dr. Jared Auclair (Associate Dean of Professional Program and Graduate Affairs, Northeastern University)

Jared Auclair is currently the Associate Dean of Professional Program and Graduate Affairs in the College of Science at Northeastern University and Associate Teaching Professor in the department of chemistry and chemical biology. In addition, Dr. Auclair is the Director of the Biopharmaceutical Analysis Laboratory (BATL), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Center of Regulatory Excellence in Biotherapeutics and Advanced Therapies, and oversees the International Council for Harmonization training. He also serves as technical supervisor for the Life Science Testing Center at Northeastern University, which is a state and CLIA-certified lab. Dr. Auclair collaborates.
