SelectScience: Large molecules get SLIM: High-Resolution Ion Mobility for simplifying complex large molecule characterization

In this webinar, Dr. Jim Arndt, from MOBILion, and Dr. Jeffrey Agar, Associate Professor at Barnett Institute Northeastern University, will discuss the benefits of HRIM-MS for enhancing structural characterization of large molecule therapeutics, while increasing throughput and reducing reliance on LC-based methods.

Specific focus will be given to how HRIM-MS provides more complete information on coeluting structural isomers, and emerging workflows associated with characterizing native proteins for formulations.

Learning objectives

  • Gain an understanding of HRIM-MS
  • Learn how HRIM-MS can augment biopharmaceutical characterization
  • Learn how HRIM-MS can provide a deeper understanding of underlying structural heterogeneity
  • Real applications of HRIM-MS in drug discovery

Who should attend?

Scientists interested in increasing throughput of large-molecule characterization assays, and those seeking more in-depth characterization of biotherapeutics for drug development and quality control.

Presenter: Dr. Jeffrey Agar (Associate Professor, Northeastern University's Barnett Institute)

Jeffrey Agar is an associate professor of Chemistry and of Pharmaceutical Science at Northeastern University's Barnett Institute. Prof. Agar’s overarching goal is to discover, and then target, disease-relevant changes in protein structure. Research can be divided into two areas: 1) develop MS-related methods that enable comprehensive (deep) molecular characterization, and then employ neurotoxicology assays to rank the importance of novel PTMs; and 2) develop small molecules that prevent toxic PTMs and stabilize proteins.

Presenter: Dr. Jim Arndt (Product Manager, MOBILion Systems)

Jim earned his BS in Physical Chemistry from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown WV in 2010, then earned a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from West Virginia University under Dr. Stephen Valentine, focusing on separation of native peptide and protein complexes by ion mobility-mass spectrometry. After graduate school, Jim spent three years as a Scientist and Subject Matter Expert at Janssen Research & Development where he gained valuable experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. After a year working for Waters Corp. as a Mass Spectrometry Specialist, Jim came to MOBILion as an Application Scientist focusing on method development for Large Molecule assays. Recently, Jim has been named the product manager of MOBILion’s second-generation platform.

Presenter: Moderator: Finn Price (Editorial Team, SelectScience)

Fionnbhar Price is a member of the SelectScience Editorial Team, who plays a core role in sourcing and publishing content for the site, with a particular focus on the field of applied chemistry. He has an MChem in Chemistry from Cardiff University, UK, and undertook a year in research characterizing bacterial protein.
