Thermo Scientific: Navigating the growing pains of communicating science online

Online communication systems can have a heavy influence in how science is perceived and understood online. With evolution to the way information is reaching scientists, researchers are faced with new challenges as well as opportunities with how information can be positioned and found online.

  • Is there a best way to communicate scientific information online and are there ways to assure the learnings reach our audiences objectively?

  • Could online communication systems do more for communicating sciences or do they cloud the scientific learnings from readers?

During this session, I’ll discuss what the latest social science can tell us about how to successfully navigate these new online environments and use them effectively. I will share a bit about our research, and I will share examples of how one’s opinions can be influenced and how scientists have an opportunity to take advantage of online environments to productively share information.

Presenter: Dietram A. Scheufele (Taylor-Bascom Chair in Science Communication and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Morgridge Institute for Research)

Dietram A. Scheufele is the Taylor-Bascom Chair in Science Communication and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Morgridge Institute for Research. His work examines the social effects of emerging science and technology. He is an elected member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering, a lifetime associate of the National Research Council, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Communication Association, and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters. His consulting experience includes work for DeepMind, Porter Novelli, PBS, WHO, and the World Bank.
